President Donald Trump and many of his Republican Party cronies continue to delegitimize the 2020 Presidential election, which resulted in wins for Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris.
While Trump announced victory on election night, others including Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell have used their own platforms to side with Trump, and refuse to acknowledge reality.
During a panel discussion on Monday’s #RolandMartinUnfiltered, guests including former chair of the DNC Finance Committee Michael Brown, political analyst Dr. Avis Jones Deweever, and founder of the People’s Alliance for Justice, Reverend Shane Harris discussed the outrageousness at the root of the GOP’s refusal to recognize the President and Vice President Elect.
“It’s the definition of sore losers, and it’s unfortunate they can’t move past this,” Brown said before bringing up another contentious Presidential race.
“In 2000, Gore set the tone by conceding after the supreme court made their decision and the country moved on. Same with four years ago, you don’t think we were all upset Secretary Clinton lost — of course we were — but after she conceded the country moved on, we tried to give this guy a chance, he blew it. But besides that, the country, mature people, and adults made sense and made statements, really conceding and moved on. Clearly they’re not ready to do that.”
In response to Martin stating that, “the allegations of theft are so hilarious,” Dr. Jones Deweever called GOP behavior, “beyond childish” and “dangerous.”
“In this administration, we have seen a huge record uptick in the number of hate crimes and white supremacist groups,” she said. “He speaks to extremists in this nation to the degree that it leads to violent actions… All of this fake news that they are perpetuating by claiming illegalities only in black cities…They are trying to disenfranchise us through their lies, while riling up their minions. This is a criminal element that is taking over our political system…They are trying to undercut the legitimacy of the next administration making it that much more hard for them to govern. This is dangerous and criminal!”
Reverend Harris isn’t shocked by Trump’s behavior, either. “This president doesn’t understand the process,” he said. “It’s not just the President. I am more concerned about the dangerousness and the criminalization of this because there are people who know the electoral process like Mitch McConnell and others who are a part of all of this, who are pushing and egging the President to fight this. It is incredible that this President does not understand that he lost the electoral process on tuesday.”
